We went here in the winter. It seems like there are a few different places to park, but we parked in a small parking lot on Raymondskill Road (free parking), arriving at around 10:00 a.m. Since we had our 7-year-old daughter with us, and the chance to see a waterfall is a good motivation for hiking if she got tired, we started by following Hackers trail. The trail is around 1.4 miles (2.3 km) long. The trail is smooth and well maintained, and the inclines are not too steep. Before arriving at the waterfall, there are some rapids that can be seen off the side of the trail, which our daughter enjoyed watching. The waterfall is not all that large, but the flow of the water is impressive, so it is a sight worth seeing.
After seeing the waterfall, our family still had plenty of energy, so we continued onto the Cliff Trail, which ends at pond that we stopped at for a scenic lunch. The pond was frozen, so we had some fun throwing some stones to see if they would break through the ice. Since the pond is at one of the trail heads, there is a parking lot that includes a bathroom, so I think it makes a good chance for a bathroom break mid-hike. On the way back we followed the Buchanan Trail, which goes up along the top of some high cliffs. The view from the cliffs allows you to see NY, NJ, and PA all at once, which was exciting for the adults, although our daughter preferred the waterfall. Personally, I was impressed because we could see the High Point State Park monument from the cliffs, another good hiking spot that we had visited previously. With a number of trails and some available bathrooms, this is a great family hike that can be made longer or shorter depending on your child’s energy and enthusiasm.
