Mount Tremper Trail

A variety of hiking trails★★☆☆☆

This is a popular hiking trail, so if you don’t get there early the lot tends to fill up quickly. If you cannot find the address for the parking lot, I’ve included a GPS code. Refer to this when looking for the parking lot. I recommend getting to the trailhead either first thing in the morning, or early afternoon (when those to set out in the morning have finished the hike and are leaving). There is a sign telling cars to park parallel, so it can only fit about 10. It was still very chilly when we arrived. There weren’t many other hikers that day, so we were able to find parking easily.
From the parking lot to the start of the climb up the mountain itself is quite steep and rocky. Surprisingly, this is the only steep part, and the hike from the registration box to the fire tower at the summit is at a rather gentle slope. However, the trail is very rocky, and I recommend going in real hiking boots as opposed to sneakers.
There is a registration box at the start of the climb here too, and for both safety reasons and because signatures help determine where to apply funds for trail maintenance, please remember to sign in.
The trail is an out-and-back rather than a loop. The trail looked long, and going by the numbers on paper it seemed like it would be a difficult hike, however once we were on the trail it did not seem that hard at all. Our daughter is only 7, and she was able to go all the way up on her own no problem. We took occasional breaks, and let the surrounding sound and sights of nature envelop us, resulting in a trip that was not too difficult.
There is a natural spring part of the way up the trail. I don’t believe it is potable however, so please be sure to filter or treat if you are planning on filling up your bottle. There are also a pair of lean-tos, one near the spring, and one at the summit. There is an outhouse at the summit lean-to, which is convenient for a mid-hike break (although it is very small).
When you arrive at the summit, the trial flattens out, and you can see the fire tower past the campsite. The fire tower can be climbed, but they ask that no more than 6 people go up at a time. For those looking for a more challenging hike, the trail does continue past the summit further into the mountains. Our family ate lunch in the lean-to at the summit, then headed back down. We climbed the mountain on a chilly day, and the summit was even colder. I am not a fan of the cold, and I had glove warmers, and would have liked hot water in a thermos, which helped lessen the chill a bit.
From the top of the fire tower, you can see a panoramic view of the Catskills. While climbing, we could hear the sound of a woodpecker pecking a tree, it felt like we were truly immersed in nature. It was truly a flawless day hike (with kids)!
