Project Hail Mary

Here is the review of Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. This is the #1 New York Times bestseller, so I started to read.
Ryland Grace, the middle school science teacher ever, slowly opens his eyes to discover himself on a spaceship. However, he can’t remember his name or his exact mission.
Before Grace takes the spaceship, the Sun has abated because of Astrophage infection, which is a single-celled organism that consumes electromagnetic radiation from the sun and carbon dioxide from Venus. The researchers are afraid that the Earth would cool and become extinct in 30 years. They activate the Project Hail Mary to prevent the Earth from being abated. After several researches, they find out that Tau Ceti is the only star to have an active Astrophage infection and not lose any luminosity. The researchers built the Hail Mary, a spaceship fueled by the Astrophage and sent three astronauts to find the solutions to let the Earth die in 30 years. Grace is one of the astronauts.
Grace, who had just woken up from a coma of over ten years, is approaching Tau Ceci on the Hail Mary, he sees another spaceship close to Tau Ceci and sees an alien in it. He names the alien, Rocky, Rocky has the same mission to save his planet from Astrophage infection. They formulates a hypothesis, tests it, and when the experiment fails, formulates the next hypothesis in an attempt to discover the truth behind stopping the Astrophage. More they communicate, the more their friendships bond.
It is a hard science-fiction book. This story is so much science. Depending on the person, it might rise to the challenge. Building friendships with aliens is a kind of human drama and trying to find the solution even though it’s tough is a good lecture for ourselves. I felt like it was a nonfiction novel. I believe this book can be enjoyed by readers of all genres.

中学校の理科教師、ライランド・グレースが目を覚ますと、知らない場所にいて、ロボットに名前を聞かれますが、自分の名前を思い出すことができないところから始まります。その後、記憶が少しずつ戻ってきて、自分は宇宙船の中にいることが分かります。
実は、グレースが宇宙船に乗る前の地球では、太陽の活動が弱くなりはじめていて、それは謎の生命体（アストロファージ）が原因だと予想されています。このままでは、約３０年で地球は低温化し、生物は絶滅する恐れがあるので、国家はそれを阻止するためのプロジェクト・ヘイル・メアリーを発動します。その後調査を進めていくうちに、太陽だけでなく他の星もアストロファージの影響を受けていることが分かりますが、唯一くじら座にあるタウ・セチという星だけ、アストロファージが避けていることが分かります。そこに行けば、太陽の温度が下がっているのを防止できるかもしれないと考え、地球の技術者は、“アストロファージ”を燃料とした宇宙船ヘイル・メアリー号を建造し、宇宙飛行士３名を乗せて出発させます。そして、グレースはその一人となります。
十年以上の昏睡から覚めたグレースを乗せたヘイル・メアリー号がタウ・セチに近づいたところで、宇宙人が乗った宇宙船に遭遇し、同じ使命をもっていることが分かります。グレースは宇宙人をロッキーと名付け、二人で仮説を立て、検証し、実験に失敗しては次の仮説を立てて、アストロファージをとめる真相をつきとめようとします。そうしているうちに、二人の間に友情が芽生えます。
サイエンス・フィクションなので、人によっては好き好きがわかれるかもしれません。でもグレースとロッキーのやりとりはとてもほほえましく、不屈の精神で難題に取り組む姿勢は素晴らしいなと思いました。フィクションなのに、本当の話のような気がして、緊張感がずっとあるところがおすすめです！
