If you like fish, and Japanese food, then I recommend this place. I believe the owner/chef is Japanese. The store itself elicits imagery of ancient Japan. Located at the end of Carmel Plaza, you can recognize the restaurant by the fish-shaped sign. You descend down a staircase to a basement-level door, where a host is there to greet you and check for reservations, before showing you to your table (I strongly recommend making a reservation in order to get a table here).
The interior is dim with only a few lights, but I really like the partitions offering privacy at each of the tables. This restaurant does not serve sushi, but you can enjoy some other Japanese cruising.
My recommendation is the Black Bean Halibut. This is a steamed fish dish, which I believe is steamed in koji. Some might find it a bit salty, but as a Japanese person I thought it was nicely seasoned. Have you ever heard about “Umami”? I think that this has umami. There is no kids menu, but my daughter used to order the salmon or pasta when we went and she was able to eat off of the adult menu.
For some people the servings might be a little small. However, personally, I thought this flavor was not reminiscent of a big city like Chicago or Manhattan, but more like a hidden treasure buried out in Carmel. So, make a reservation and head out there. If I get another chance, I would like to go back once more.

魚介、和食が好みなら、ここをおすすめします。オーナー/シェフは、日本人でしょうか。昭和の日本を思い出すお店の作りです。カーメルプラザの端っこに、飛魚の看板が見えたら、そこがお店です。地下への階段を降りて、ドアを開けるとレジがあり、そこにいる人に、予約があるかないか、何人か伝えると、店内に案内してくれます。（予約は前もってしておくことをおすすめします）
店内は、若干照明が暗いですが、テーブルごとに仕切られているのはいい点です。お寿司はこのお店では扱っていませんが、お寿司以外の日本食を楽しむことができます。
私のおすすめは、LACK BEAN HALIBUTです。これは蒸し魚の料理で、麹と一緒に蒸されているのかなと思いました。人によっては塩辛いと感じるかもしれませんが、日本人の私にはいい塩梅でした。アメリカでは「うまみ」という言葉でいうとイメージしやすいでしょうか？キッズメニューはありませんが、我が子はサーモンかパスタをオーダーして食べていました。パスタは完食できませんが、普通に大人メニューを食べれました。
人によっては、一品ごとの量が少なめに感じるかもしれません。でも個人的には、この味をシカゴやマンハッタンのような大都会ではなく、カーメルで食べれるのは貴重だと思います。気になる方は、前もって予約して、行ってみてください。私も機会があれば、行きたいお店の一つです。
