JADE CITY

Here is the review of Jade City by Fonda Lee. This book is nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, winner and I decided to read it because I like fantasy books.
Kaul and Ayt family had secured Kekon island’s freedom from foreign invasion and they rebuilt its prosperity. They are honorable Green Bone warriors and can use Jade magic.
Now, it is a new generation era. Two clans, No Peak clan (Kaul) and The Mountain clan(Ayt), fight for power and dominance to overthrow colonial rule. A powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence.
It’s the story of Lan, Hilo, Shae, and Anden from the Kaul family. They think family is duty, magic is power and honor is everything. You can see not only fantasy factors but also politics and human dramas. It is very powerful and if you are interested in Asian culture, you can see it through the book as well. This is the first novel in the Green Bone Saga and was followed by Jade War (2019) and Jade Legacy (2021). I hope you have a chance to read this book!

この本は、世界幻想文学大賞に選ばれており、私はファンタジーが好きなので読むことにしました。
ひと昔前、ケコン島は、カウル家とアイト家によって、他国の侵略をしのぎました。彼らは、ケコン島で翡翠マジックを使える特別な一族で、グリーンボーン戦士といわれています。現在この二大勢力は、ケコン島の首都ジャンルーンの支配権を争っており、誰でも翡翠を扱える強力な新薬が登場した今、カウル家とアイト家の緊張が、暴力へと変わります。
カウル家の4人の子供（ラン、ヒロ、シェイ、アンデン）を中心に、物語は進みます。一族として、家の名誉を守るために何ができるのか、人としてどんな人生を送りたいのか、マジックを使えるというのは、人生にどんな意味があるのか。ファンタジーの要素だけでなく、政治や人情ドラマが入り混じっていて、迫力があります。また、アジアの要素が入っているので、読んでいて納得できる考え方や、名前がでてきます。この本は、3部作の1冊目なので、次の本も読んでもらいたいです。
