The Change

Here is the review of The Change by Kirsten Miller. This is one of the GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB’s pick-up books! In the Long Island oceanfront community of Mattauk, three different women discover the 3 women’s corpses and they try to solve the murder case instead of the police.
Nessa inherited from her grandmother the gift that she can hear the voices from the dead. Harriett had her career as an advertising director, but she faces her life when her career and marriage collapsed. Ambitious former executive Jo quit her job because she was tired of being in the gender inequality and has own fitness gym which is only for women. They didn’t know each other before. Their meeting brings a whole new type of empowerment and builds their friendship.
One character tells Nessa that “Our lives are designed to have three parts. The first is education. The second, creation. And in part three, we put our experience to use and protect those who are weaker. This third stage, which you have entered, can be one of incredible power.” I agree with this and I want to give advice to my child based on my experience when she needs it.
By the way, I like mystery novels so I enjoyed reading this at the beginning. But, I felt bizarre when they started to focus on the fact that a suspect must be a man without any proof. They just got the conclusion based on their experience. This book might be a feminist literature, but it shouldn’t be cliché of men-hating tropes.

この本は、ABC のアメリカのテレビ番組グッド モーニング アメリカのコーナー、グッドモーニングアメリカブッククラブで選ばれた本の一つです。ロングアイランドの海に面したマットークという街で、中年期に入った3人の女性が、発見した3 人の女性の遺体の解明をしていく話です。
ネッサは、祖母のように死者の声を聴くことができるという才能があります。50歳目前のハリエットは、男性社会の中で強く生きてきましたが、キャリアと結婚の崩壊から、自分の人生は何かに直面しています。野心的なジョーもハリエットのように、キャリアを社会でつんできましたが、男性社会の世の中にうんざりし、起業します。何も接点がなかったこの3人が、変死体の解明をきっかけに、友情をはぐくみなら、マンパワーを発揮していきます。
本の中で、「人生は、三つのパートからできている。一つ目は教育期。次は創造期。最後は、これまでの経験を活かし、弱い立場にある人々を守る期間。」という一説があります。自分の人生を顧みた時、確かのこと通りだなと思いました。今まで学んできたことを糧に、子供を守りたいと改めて思いました。
私はミステリー小説が好きです。最初は、ドキドキしながら読み進めていきました。違和感を覚えたのは、女性3人が何の根拠もなく、男性が最初から犯人だと決めつけていたことに、いささか疑問を感じました。この本は、フェミニスト文学ですが、男性に対する憎悪の方が多いと感じたことが残念な点でした。
