The Christmas Bookshop

Here is the review of The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan. This is the New York Times bestseller! The reason I wanted to read it was that this book cover gave me Christmas festivities and also the setting was set in Edinburgh in which I have been interested.
Carmen has a big sister, Sophia and they haven’t gotten along since they were children. Even though she has 2 nieces and 1 nephew, she avoids going to her family reunion Christmas party every year. When her working place is forced to shut down, the situation changes. Sophia is a lawyer and one of her clients, Mr. McCredie, faces the crisis , which is he has to decide to sell his ancient bookshop or he has to sell more books to get more profits. He doesn’t want to sell his bookstore, so Sophia asks Carmen to help him run his bookstore.
I have been interested in Edinburgh, so I kept checking Google Maps when I saw the name of streets, castles, parks while reading. I could clearly imagine the street and small shops with dim light under snow. It felt like I was in Edinburgh.
It was heartwarming to see that sisters are getting closer and that Carmen, nieces and nephew are building a strong foundation in their relationships. The store is disorganized but charming. If you want to read about the Christmas vibe and also like Edinburgh, it is good for you.

この本は、ニューヨークタイムズのベストセラーに選ばれています。読もう！と思ったのは、クリスマスっぽいもの、エディンバラが舞台になっているというのが理由です。
カルメンには姉（ソフィア）がいますが、幼少の頃からあまり仲が良くありませんでした。カルメンは、姉が結婚し、子供ができても、クリスマスの家族団らんには参加せず、距離を置いてきました。しかし、クリスマス前に解雇が決まり、カルメンが職を失ったとき、事態が変わります。弁護士のソフィアのクライアントの一人（マクレディ氏）が、エディンバラで小さな本屋を経営していましたが、クリスマスまでに利益をあげないと、店を売らないといけなくなります。売りたくないマクレディ氏の本屋へ、ソフィアはカルメンを送り、売り上げを伸ばそうとたくします。
私はもともとエディンバラに興味を持っているので、本文に出てくるストリートの名前や、お城、公園など、本を読みながらグーグルマップで場所を確認しながら読み進めました。ライトアップされた石畳が続く通りや、イルミネーションで着飾ったお店などが、鮮明に頭の中でイメージができ、まるで旅行に行っているかのような気分になりました。
今まで仲たがいしていた姉妹の関係が修復していくところ、甥っ子や姪っ子と絆を深めていくところは、心に響きました。話自体は巧妙に作られているわけではないですが、かわいらしさがにじみ出ています。
エディンバラに興味がある人、行ったことがある人には、興味深い本かもしれません。
