Once There Were Wolves

I decided to read Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy because it is one of the Instant New York Times Bestsellers. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it.
Inti Flynn is a biologist and has been studying wolves. She moved to Scotland with her team to reintroduce fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands. Local people object to this idea as wolves are dangerous and she and her team explain how much merit we will have if the numbers of wolves increase in nature academically.
The story is very heavy like the weather in Scotland and slow. There is not only the story of wolves but also the reason why Inti doesn’t believe in humans through the flashback scenes.
You can see the unexpected thing in the end, but it was not enough for me to like this book as a mystery novel. I feel like this book is similar to Haruki Murakami’s world. If someone likes his books, I think you will enjoy Once There Were Wolves.

インティ・フリンは、生物学者でオオカミの研究をしています。養殖された14頭のオオカミを連れてスコットランドに行き、野生に放ちます。オオカミが増えることに不安を示す現地の人と対立しながらも、生物学的にオオカミが増えるとどんなメリットがもたらされるのかを学術的に示して理解を得ようとします。物語はスコットランドの天気のように、どんより重く、スローペースで進んでいきます。オオカミの話だけでなく、インティがなぜ人を信じなくなったのかなど、回想シーンを交えながら物語は進みます。
物語の後半は思ってもみなかった展開になりますが、ミステリー小説としては物足りなさを感じました。村上春樹の著作に似ているところがあるように感じたので、彼の著作が好きな人にとっては、いい本なのかもしれません。
