We went here in the deep of winter. Even more, there was a strong cold wind that day, and it felt like if we were to take our hands out of our gloves, they would freeze. I recommend hiking this in spring or fall. There is plenty of free parking, however, there is no bathroom, so find somewhere in town to go before heading out on the trail.
There used to be a dance hall at the summit, and you can see the remains of a cable-car can be seen while climbing. There are some train tracks that can be seen on the road leading up to the trail as well. Now, for the start of the trip. The hike surprisingly starts with a metal staircase with about 150 steps. I thought my daughter might find this frustrating, but she enjoyed climbing them. After these, there is a hill road that stretches on and on. It is also steep, so while the climb is only 1 mile, it feels like it is 3. On the way up there are rocks covered in ice, which was very pretty. There was also water that had flowed between the rocks in the path and frozen, which was very pretty. Once you’ve climbed the nearly heart-breaking mountain, going up the trail the dance hall remains were off to the right, but on the left side the trail (we turned right to get there). Rather than going right to the building once you see it, it’s better to continue over to the outlook first, then head to the building on the way back (our family went right over to the remains, but the path was narrow and on a slant). There is a lot of space to walk around at the outlook, with a little bit of up and down. You can see the town of Beacon and the Hudson Valley from the top. The view is very refreshing after the tough climb. There is also a fire tower that you can continue on to, but we felt it might be a little too much for our seven-year-old that day, so we just stuck to the Casino Trail.
Take it slow on the steep trail when going back down so you don’t slip. The trail is short, so if you have extra time, you can visit this modern art museum in town, there is this popular local bakery, and you can visit the rustic Cold Springs one town over as well.
