The House of Eve

Here is the review of The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson. I chose this book because a lot of people admire it and I just wanted to read a book which is not a fantasy novel.
The book takes us to the 1950’s and follows a woman named Eleanor and a young girl named Ruby. Ruby is 15 years old and studies hard to get the scholarship to go to a college, so that she doesn’t face poverty any more.
Eleanor is from a small town in Ohio and a college student in Washington, DC with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold. 
I wondered how Eleanor and Ruby meet together because I couldn’t see any common things in the beginning. You can see the historical background in the book. There was just so much drama that I was exhausted emotionally, however I could learn the history of America back in the 1950’s. That’s good.

The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson の感想を書きます。高評価を得ている本の一つだったということ、ファンタジーと違う分野の本を読みたかったので、この本を読むことにしました。
舞台は1950年代のアメリカで、ルビーとエレノアの視点で進んでいきます。15歳のルビーは、奨学金をもらって大学に進学し、将来貧困とは無縁の生活を送ることを目標にしています。ところが、近所の男の子と恋に落ち、妊娠してしまいます。
エレノアは、ワシントンDCで大学生活を始めた、オハイオ出身の女の子で、将来食べていける人になるために、大学進学し、バイトをしながら勉学に励んでいます。黒人系のエリート、ウィリアムに出会い、恋に落ち、身ごもります。
全く境遇が違う二人が、どうやって接点をもつのか。それぞれの話をハラハラドキドキしながら読ました。歴史的な背景の上でストーリーが進んでいくので、時に感情的になり、読むのがしんどく感じる部分もありましたが、学ぶきっかけになったと思うので、読んでよかったと思う一冊でした。女性向けかな。
