Mad Honey

Here is the review of Mad Honey. This book was written by Jodi Picoult who is one of the New York Times bestseller authors and Jennifer Finney Boylan.
Olivia McAfee divorces and goes back to New Hampshire hometown with her son, Asher. She takes over her father’s beekeeping business. Asher makes his girlfriend in 12th grade. Her name is Lily and she moved in from the West coast. Sometimes they help with Olivia’s work after school and Olivia starts to like Lily.
One day, Olivia has a phone call from Asher and is told Lily is dead and he is in trouble. Asher is charged with murder in the first degree. Olivia believes he is innocent but she starts to doubt her thoughts because Asher’s father used to abuse her. She is afraid that Asher might have a darker side as well as his father.
As “you need to think about the difference between what is secret and what is private” in this book, the story is a compelling mystery and also a legal thriller. 
I wish I could have read the stories of Lily after she opened her new chapter in her life. I feel like this book is telling us not to happen like this sad incident in the real world.

オリビア・マカフィーは、心臓外科医の旦那と離婚し、一人息子のアッシャーと一緒に地元（ニューハンプシャー州）に戻り、父の仕事を継ぎ、養蜂家として生計を立てています。アッシャーは、高校3年生の新学期に、彼女（リリー）ができます。彼女はアッシャーと一緒に、オリビアの仕事を手伝う仲になります。オリビアは、二人のやりとりをみて、リリーに好印象を持ちます。ある日、息子から電話がかかり、「リリーが亡くなった。警察に尋問されるから、助けに来てほしい」と言われます。アッシャーは、リリーの殺人犯として裁判にかけられます。オリビアはアッシャーは無実だと信じていますが、離婚前、完璧はな人だと思っていた夫からの家庭内暴力を思い出し、アッシャーも彼のような側面があるのではないかと疑心暗鬼になります。
本文に、「’秘密’と、’プライベート’の違いについて、考える必要がある」といっている箇所がありました。すごく微妙な線引きだけど、なるほどと納得した次第です。ストーリーの裏にあるテーマは重く、ミステリー小説な要素もあると思います。
個人的には、新しい人生をはじめたばかりのリリーに、「今」そして「未来」をもっと長く楽しんで欲しかったので、人生を終えるという結末になってしまったのが、すごくつらかったです。現実世界で、同じようなことが起きないよう、教えてくれる本のような気がしました。
