When we went to Washington D.C. for sightseeing, I wanted to go to a place that was slightly different than the places we normally visit. Our family is not Christian, but this church is the largest Roman Catholic church in the United States, and anyone is free to enter as they please. If you are thinking “What is a church like?”, or if you are interested in seeing the architecture, this is a place in D.C. that you can visit easily within 30 minutes by car. In any case, the building, artwork, and decorations in the Basilica are impressive. We visited just after Christmas, there was a Christmas tree and other Christmas ornamentation throughout the church.
After taking the first step inside the church you are enveloped in the solemn atmosphere, and even if you are not Christian it can give you the feeling of an unseen power. You can tell that it is a holy place. The Basilica has a total of 81 chapels within, making for a grand and spacious building. The artwork is breathtaking.
My one regret was that I was not able to hear the pipe organs live. There was a massive pipe organ in the church, and I feel like you would be able to hear and feel its sounds down to your core. The parking lot is a little ways down hill from the church, but you are free to use it. If you are looking for a more detailed tour of the building, they do have guided tours every hour if you make a reservation. If you have the time, this is a great place to visit if you come to Washington D.C.

ワシントンDCへ観光へ行った際、ちょっと違ったところも見てみたい人におすすめの場所を紹介します。私はキリスト教ではありませんが、こちらの教会は北米で最大のローマカトリック教会として有名で、信者でなくても自由に入ることができます。「教会ってどんなところだろう？」「建物をみてみたい」、という人は、車で市内から30分圏内で訪れることができます。とにかく建物、アート、装飾が荘厳です。私たちはクリスマスの後に訪れたので、館内にはまだクリスマスツリーやプレゼピオなどが飾られていました。
一歩館内に入ると、おごそかな雰囲気があり、信者でなくてもなにか見えないものを感じることができような感覚を覚えました。神聖という言葉を感じさせてくれる場所です。館内は81のチャペルがあります。とにかく広くて、壮大です。館内のアートにため息がでるほど美しいです。毎日ミサも行われているようなので、時間が合う人はスケジュールに合わせて参加してみるのもいいかもしれません。
一つ心残りなのは、パイプオルガンの生演奏を聴けなかったということです。大きなパイプオルガンがあったので、それはもう体の底から響く音を聞けるのではないかと思います。駐車場は、教会の高台から少し下ったところにあるので、それを利用してください。もっと詳しく館内の説明を聞いてみたい人は、約1時間ほどのツアーを事前予約することができます。
ワシントンDCに観光に行った際、時間があればおすすめしたい観光場所です。
