My husband told me “Since NJ is on the East Coast, there isn’t really a good place to see a sunset,” and even though you can’t watch the sun dip down into the horizon, I thought you should still be able to watch the setting sun on the east coast, and I looked it up online. As expected, there are a number of places in NJ where you can go to watch a sunset. We ended up choosing the Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area. We had been to Point Pleasant Beach before, so we had a good idea of what this place out be like and it what we chose.
When we arrived, we saw a number of newly constructed vacation homes packed in tightly along the streets, and roadside parking was very crowded, If you go during vacation season, you may need to rely on luck and timing in order to secure a parking spot. There are also a few paid parking lots, so you may be able to use those as well.
The place we went to see the sun set near the ocean was by entering on the 3rd avenue entrance, then heading south along the path. The trail suddenly turns to sand, so bring some sandals if you are going in the summer. As you walk along the path it will quickly open up to a view of the ocean. Then, you can walk along the beach, watching the red sun set over in the west. You can’t watch the sun set into the horizon, but you do get a good view of the evening sky, with the sun dying the sky with reds and oranges.
It was low tide when we were there, so we were able to walk along the beach. It looks like the water comes most of the way up the beach at high tide, so if you want to walk along the water and watch the sunset, you will need to come on a day when a low tide arrives in the evening. We saw a number of people hunting for shellfish while we were there, another great low-tide activity (if you have a license). There are a number of boats that you can see travelling through the bay, and there is a rail road far off in the distance to the west as well.
It may have been a coincidence, but despite the parking being completely packed we only saw about 10 people on the beach while we were there, meaning you can peacefully enjoy watching the sunset, listening to the sound of the waves.

主人に「NJは東海岸だから、きれいに夕日が見れるところなんてないよ」と言われたのですが、地平線に沈むところは見えなくても、夕日ぐらいは東海岸でも見れるでしょ？と思い、ネットで調べてみました。NJで夕日がきれいに見えると言われているところは、やはりいくつかあるようです。その中で我が家が選んだのは、Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Areaです。以前、ポイントプレザントビーチに行っているので、どんなところかイメージしやすかったので、この場所を選びました。
着いてみると、築年数が浅いと思われるバケーションハウスが所狭しと並んでいて、路上駐車も見事に埋まっていました。バケーションシーズンに行く場合は、駐車場スペース確保は運とタイミングに任せないといけないかもしれません。お金を払って停める場所もあったので、そちらもうまく利用してください。
私たちは海にほど近いところで夕日を見たかったので、391 3rdアベニューの南に下ったところの最後の入り口から入りました。足元は急に砂浜にかわるので、夏場の場合はビーチサンダルに履き替えてもいいかもしれません。小道を進んでいくと左手側に早速海がみえてきます。そこから海岸線を歩きながら西側に、赤く染まった夕日を見ることができます。地平線に沈む夕日は見れませんが、太陽が赤く染まり、空の色もオレンジや青などに変わったところを見れます。
私たちが行ったときは引き潮の時だったので、海岸線を歩くことができました。満ち潮の時だと奥の方まで歩いていくことはできないかもしれませんので、海岸線を歩きたい人は、潮の満ち引きの時間帯を事前に調べておくといいかもしれません。数人が貝を掘って持って帰っているのをみたので、貝堀をしたい人はやはり引き潮時をおすすめします。海から戻ってくるヨットが通るために、遠く西側に見える鉄橋が上がったり下がったりするのを眺めることができるのも面白いです。
たまたまかもしれませんが、車がたくさんあった割には海岸には人は10人以下だったので、静かに夕日が沈むのを見ることができますし、波の音を聞くこともできます。違った時間の過ごし方をしたい人は、試してみてください。
