When we went to Portland, we took a ferry to Peaks Island. It’s a small island, so it makes for a good half-day trip. You can take your car with you on the ferry to the island, and you can also rent bicycles and golf carts there. There are public restrooms near where you depart the ferry.
　First we had a light lunch at Peaks Cafe. You can buy simple sandwiches, bread and pastries, and drinks there. It seems like a popular place on the island, so there may be times when they run out of things like muffins. It is the perfect place if you are just looking for a light meal.
　Next, we visited the Umbrella Cover Museum, which is in the Guinness Book or Records for the world’s largest collection of umbrella covers. I like the little corner with the tartan plan covers, where you try to guess which country the cover comes from like Scotland and Ireland. There was even an umbrella cover from Japan! It has covers from every state in America, so look for yours when you visit. If you’re lucky, the owner may even play you the accordion! Meeting the kind, whimsical owner was a highlight of the trip. 
　The owner also gave us a map of the island, so we followed it to the coastline on the eastern side of the island, where there was a collection of stone cairn art, and an abandoned WW2 military fort called Battery Steele. At the cairn sculptures, I wondered how some people had managed to pile them into their creative towers. We had some fun trying to make our own as well, so give it a try! 
　Battery Steele was the largest gun battery in America at the time it was in use. As you can see in the picture, it is now covered in vegetation, so it was hard to really grasp its size. It is also covered in a lot of graffiti. There is a long tunnel that runs along the spine of the that doesn’t have any lights, so if you want to see the artwork along the inside you will need to bring a flashlight. We walked through the tunnel from one end to the other, but it is cool even in the summer, and the dark chilly tunnel is a bit of a test of courage. I think places like this are few and far between, so head out there and take a walk. 
　We took the ferry back to Portland , but as it was a high tourist season it was crowded, and there is a chance you won’t get the first ferry back when you arrive. I would advise getting there early if you can. Just a short ferry ride brings you to a whole new atmosphere, so if you ever visit Portland hop on a boat out there if you have the time.

　ポートランドに行った際、フェリーに乗ってピークスアイランドに行きました。小さな島なので半日あれば回りきることができます。車をポートランドから持っていくこともできますし、島で自転車やカートを借りることもできます。島内に公衆トイレは、フェリー乗り場の近くに一か所だけあります。
　まず我が家はPeaks Cafeで軽めのランチを食べました。簡単なサンドイッチやパン、ドリンクを買うことができます。人気なお店みたいなので、時間帯によって、マフィンなどは売り切れっている可能性もあります。軽食が食べたい人にはピッタリな場所だと思います。それから、ギネスブックに認定された、Umbrella Cover Museumを訪れました。世界中の折りたたみ傘カバーが集められた小さな博物館です。私は、タータンチェックをみて、どれがスコットランドでどれがイングランドのものなのか当てるコーナーが、楽しかったです。そして日本もありました！日本は錦鯉のカバーだった気がします。アメリカの各州のものもあるので、訪れる際は住まいの傘カバーがどれか探してみてください。そして運がよければ、オーナーがアコーディオンを弾いてくれます！優しい、魅力的なオーナーに出会えて、旅の醍醐味となりました。
　オーナーが島の地図をくれたので、私たちは海岸線に移動し、石が積み上げられたオブジェがある場所と、Battery Steeleという第二次世界大戦中に使われた米軍の要塞を訪れました。石のスカルプチャーがある場所は、どうやって石を積み上げて、その形をキープしているのだろう？と思うようなものもあって、楽しかったです。オリジナルのスカルプチャーを作ってみてください。
　 Battery Steeleは、当時アメリカ国内で作られた砲台の中で一番大きなもののようです。訪れた時は写真の通り、植物に覆われていたので、実際の大きさは見て取れませんでした。たくさんのグラフィティがあります。要塞の中のトンネル内は電気が通ってないので、絵をよく見たい人は、懐中電灯を持参していくことをお勧めします。端から端まで歩いていきましたが、夏でもひんやりとしていて、肝試しをしているような気分になりました。なかなかこういった場所を訪れることもないと思うので、島に訪れた際は実際に歩いてみてください。
　ポートランドに帰るフェリーですが、シーズン中などの観光客が多い場合、乗りたい時間のものに乗れない可能性があります。早めに乗り場について、順番を待つことをおすすめします。フェリーに乗るだけでも、いつもと違った雰囲気を味わえるので、ポートランドに行かれる際、時間があれば訪れてみてください。
