Here is the review of This Book Will Save Your Life by A. M. Homes. I found this book when I was in London. The book cover was showing colorful donuts, so I decided to read this.
Richard Novak, a wealthy, isolated, and disaffected middle-aged man in Los Angeles who is physically and emotionally detached from the world. Following a severe health scare (intense pain) and a sinkhole opening in his yard, he is forced to engage with life again, forging unexpected connections with a donut shop owner, a distressed housewife, and his family. This book tells you if you are willing to lose yourself and open up to the world around you.
A lot of unrealistic events happen to Richard over and over, it was too much for me. I decided not to choose the book from the book cover anymore. I guess I will skip this author’s book next time.

主人公のリチャード・ノヴァクは、ロサンゼルスに暮らす裕福な中年男性ですが、孤独を好み、世の中に対して冷めた目をもっています。彼は肉体的にも精神的にも、周囲の世界から隔絶された状態で生きていましたが、ある日激しい痛みに見舞われ、さらには自宅の庭に巨大な陥没穴（シンクホール）が出現するという出来事が重なったことで、彼は否応なく再び「人生」と向き合うことになります。そして、ドーナツ店の店主や、悩みを抱える主婦、さらには自身の家族といった人々との間に、思いがけないつながりを築いていきます。この本は、あなたが「自分自身」という殻を脱ぎ捨て、周囲の世界に対して心を開く覚悟があるかどうかを問いかけてくる一冊です。
あまりに非現実すぎる話が次から次へと舞い込んでくることについていけなかったので、ジャケ買いはあまりよくないなと痛感した一冊でした。もうこの作者の本は読まないと思います。
