1939年、フランスの小さな村キャリボーで、ヴィアンヌは、戦争に向かう旦那のアントニーにさよならを告げます。この時彼女はフランスにナチス軍が侵攻するとは思ってもみませんでした。
ヴィアンヌには、妹のイザベルがいます。妹とヴィアンヌは小さいころから仲たがいで、交わることがありません。イザベルは、男性だけでなく女性である自分も、戦争中できることはないのか、模索しています。
