Before We Were Yours

Here is the review of Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. This book is a historical fiction that has headlines plucked from the real world. It is based on the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage from 1924 to 1950.
I read a lot of reviews of this book that are worth reading. I didn’t know what kind of story it was and just started to read.
I didn’t know the history that Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country until reading this book. So, I was in shock while reading because I couldn’t believe this actually happened in America way back.
It touched my nerve when the main character, Rill Foss, kept believing her parents came to save her and siblings from the orphanage and tried to protect them from people who were trying to harm them. She was only 12 years old but it was like she was a mother for her siblings.
This book deserves to be read by a lot of people and we have to learn what happened in the past so as not to make the same mistakes again.

1924年から1950年、テネシーにあった孤児院で実際にあったことに基づいた小説です。
この本を読む前に、たくさんの人がいい本だといっている批評を私は目にしたので、読むことにしました。高評価を得ているといえども、一体どんな話なのか分からず読み始めたので、心の準備をしないまま読みました。正直、心が引き裂かれそうでした。
孤児院のトップ、ジョージア・タンは貧しい家庭の子供を自分の孤児院に引き取り、裕福な家庭に売っていました。メインキャラクターの一人、リル（長女）と兄弟たちもこの孤児院に連れていかれ、辛い思い、卑劣な環境で毎日を過ごします。それでもいつか自分の両親が迎えに来てくれると信じて、長女らしく兄弟たちを守りぬこうと奮闘します。たった12歳の女の子が、母親のようにも感じました。
人身売買などは決してあってはならないことだと思います。二度とこのような問題を起こさないためにも、過去の過ちを学び、明るい未来、よりよい未来につくるために、読んで欲しいなと思う一冊です。
