Here, I will introduce recommended spots for hiking with children in the United States. This time, I would like to tell you about a hike in Overlook Mountain Trail in NY. The best season for hiking is between April and November. We hiked in April, but it was very cold and we couldn’t climb up the fire tower at the summit because of the gust. This trail is located close to Catskill Mountains, so it is easy to fill with a lot of people during the best season. There is parking for free at the entrance though, please note that there is a chance to be full by 9:30 A.M.. There is no bathroom, so find somewhere in Woodstock to go before heading out on the trail. Be mindful and stay on the path, because there are rattlesnakes present in the warmer months.
The trail is a wide gravel road. You can see the mountain house ruins. It’s amazing to see elements of the house still intact like the staircase and fireplace. After the ruins, the summit is coming soon (Probably it is for a little less than a mile.) You can see impressive views of the Hudson River Valley from the summit.
After the hike, I recommend exploring Woodstock where it is famous for music and art if you have time.

アメリカで、子連れハイキングのおすすめスポットを紹介していきます。今回はニューヨーク州にある、オーバールックマウンテントレイルです。All Trailsでは4～11月がベストシーズンとされています。我が家は4月に行きましたが、とても寒く、強風で、山頂にあったファイヤータワーに登れませんでした。キャットスキル州立公園の近辺なので、シーズン中は混むことが予想されます。駐車場はトレイルの入り口に無料のスペースがありますが、すぐにいっぱいになるようなので早朝に行くことをおすすめします。トイレも近辺にないので、ウッドストックの街ですましておくことをおすすめします。そして蛇も出るようですので、温暖な季節の頃に行く際には、気を付けてください。
トレイルは広い砂利道をひたすら登り続けます。個人的にこの点は残念でした。途中、廃墟になったお屋敷（ホテル？）に出会います。標高の高いところになんでお屋敷があったのだろう？当時はどんなインテリアだったのだろう？と、興味を非常にそそられました。そこから頂上まではすぐです。山頂付近にいくと、ようやくハドソンバレーが見えてきます。天気のいい日だと、見晴らしがよいと思います。当初に書きましたが、我が家が訪れた時はとにかく寒くて強風が吹き荒れていたので、眺めを楽しむことはできませんでした。天気に恵まれた方は、ファイヤータワーに登ったり、山頂から少し外れたところにある、ビューポイントからの眺めを楽しんでほしいです。
約5マイルのトレイルですが、子連れでも案外早くハイキングを終えることができました。行きの登りを頑張れば、帰りはひたすら下るだけなので、時間を要さないのかもしれません。
トレイルが終わったら、芸術の村として知られているウッドストックを散策するのをおすすめします。避暑地として有名なので、夏場はきっと過ごしやすいと思われます。
最後に、我が家は事前情報を得ていなかったので訪問できませんでしたが、トレイルの入り口前にあるチベット寺院は一般公開されているようです。シャツ着用、短パン禁止などといった細かいルールがありますので、もしこちらに立ち寄られたい場合は、事前にHPをみて事前準備をして訪れてみてください。
