When Crickets Cry

Here is the review of When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin. There were high reviews and there was a waiting list to borrow from our library, so I decided to read.
Jonathan Mitchell, aka “Reese” lives in the south in Lake Burton, GA. He sees a seven-year-old Annie selling lemonade at a stand in downtown to help raise money for a heart transplant that she desperately needs. He buys a cup of lemonade from Annie and then heads to his car. In those few seconds, a terrible accident occurs. He tries to keep her alive until EMS arrives. He and Charlie, his brother-in-law, run a boat building/fixing business after his wife Emma dies from a heart condition. Until then, he was one of the most talented heart surgeons in the world. Is he able to face his job again through Annie?
The story was too slow and boring for me because I could see how it goes because of the setting of a sick child and a veteran heart surgeon. If you like a religious fantasy and sentimental story, you might enjoy it.

ジョージア州バートン湖近くに住んでいるジョナサン・リース。ミッチェルが、町に買い出しに行ったとき、7歳の女の子アニーが、心臓移植手術の資金を集めるためにレモネードを売っているのを見かけたところから始まります。リースはアニーからレモネードを一杯買いますが、その直後アニーが車にひかれるのをみて、リースは救急車が来るまでアニーの命を救おうと医療措置をほどこします。今は義理の弟と一緒にボートの建造・修理業を営んでいましたが、リースの妻のエマが心臓病で亡くなるまで、敏腕の心臓外科医でした。妻の死後、医師の仕事に向き合えないリースと、エマと同じように心臓病を抱えたアニーとの交流を通して、リースがどうやって自分の人生に向き合うかが書かれた話です。
個人的には、話のテンポがゆっくりで、先が読めてしまうところが退屈でした。病気系、キリスト教がらみの話が大丈夫で、涙したいっていう人にお勧めしますが、感傷的なものを好まない人には物足りなさを感じると思います。
