The Briar Club

Here is the review of The Briar Club by Kate Quinn. This is the #1 New York Times bestselling author, so I started to read.
Thanksgiving, 1954, Washington, DC. The terrors of the Macarthy era have not yet loosened their grip on the country. A murder has been committed in a boarding house, Briarwood House, for women, and it’s clear the bumbling police are not catching on that the 14 people in the room are in on… something.
After the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room 5 years ago before the incident, residents’ friendship starts to bond. Who was murdered and who is the suspect? Stories go through each woman’s point of view to solve the mystery. Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America and it has high reviews. I, however, didn’t like it, that’s because I found the story to be a slow burn that didn’t quite deliver. I won’t be yearning to pick up another from this author.

1950年の感謝祭、ワシントンD.Cにある女子寮ブライアーウッド・ハウスで殺人事件がおきます。警察は現場にいますが、そこに居合わせた14人の中に犯人がいるとは全く気付いていません。事件が起きる約5年前、未亡人グレース・マーチが屋根裏部屋に引っ越してきたことをきっかけに、ブライアーウッド・ハウスに住んでいる住人と、大家さんの子供たちが友情を育み始めます。一体誰が亡くなって、犯人なのかを一人一人の住人に焦点をあてて、読み進めます。同時に歴史的背景も含まれているので、この時代の女性の暮らしがどんなものだったのかみてとれます。高評価の本ですが、私的には好みませんでした。理由は歴史的背景をよく知らないからなのか、それともストーリーの展開がゆっくりすぎたのか。たぶんこの作者の本は、もう読まないと思います。
