The Quiet Librarian

Here is the review of The Quiet Librarian by Allen Eskens. I decided to read it because this is Allen’s newest book.
Hana Babic is a quiet, middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants nothing more than to be left alone. But when a detective arrives with the news that her best friend, Amina, has been murdered and has questions for her and little, he doesn’t know that Hana has a complicated past stemming back thirty years to war torn Bosnia.
Hana grew up in Bosnia in the war-torn 1990s. Back then her name was Nura, and she lived with her family in the mountains. But one day, Serbian soldiers murdered her entire family in front of her, and she was able to avoid being killed because she was hiding. After that, Hanna met Amina in Bosnia and they were able to seek asylum in the United States. Hanna’s past and present collide, and Hanna knows she could be next! It’s full of grief, bravery, sacrifice and a love story. This book is different from his other books. But still, I like his writing. I will recommend this if you like historical fiction and mystery.

ハナ・バビッチはミネソタ州に住む、物静かな中年女性の図書館司書で、何よりも一人で静かに暮らすことを望んでいます。しかし、刑事が現れ、親友が殺害されたという知らせを聞いて、刑事がハナに簡単な尋問をします。このときハナは自分に何か邪悪なものが迫ってきていることを悟ります。なぜなら、彼女と親友（アミナ）は、過去に暗い共有していた過去の暗い歴史があるからです。
1990年代、ハナはボスニアで生まれ、家族と一緒に山で暮らしていました。当時彼女の名は、ヌラでした。ボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナ紛争の最中、家族はヌラの目の前で虐殺されます。ヌラは隠れていたので命を取り留めます。そしてその後、アミナに出会い、アメリカに亡命します。アミナが殺害された今、ハナは自分も殺されると悟ります。
悲しみ、勇気、犠牲、そして愛の物語に満ちてる一冊でした。あらためて戦争の怖さを知ると同時に、同じ過ちを犯してはいけないと考えさせられる話です。Allen Eskensの本は他にも読みましたが、今までとはまた違った内容で、これはこれで楽しめました。やっぱり彼の本は私の好みです。歴史的フィクション、ミステリーが好きな人におすすめです。
