The Berry Pickers

Here is the review of The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters. I chose to read it because it is a national bestseller and I really like blueberries, so I couldn’t help reading it.
The book is written from the perspective of two characters, Joe who is a brother whose life is consumed by guilt and anger after his little sister disappears and his brother is killed in a fight and Norma/Ruthie who is the little sister who grows up never knowing who she is, where she came from.
The story is set in Nova Scotia and Maine in 1962. I have watched Sullivan Crossing and started to have interest in Nova Scotia so what a coincidence! The writing is beautiful and full of history. It was quite slow and a kind of sad story, so it was not my favorite.

The Berry Pickers by Amanda Petersの感想を書きます。ベストセラーに選ばれていること、そして私はブルーベリー好きなので、表紙を見た瞬間読まずにはいられない！と思い、読むことにしました。
二人の視点で話は書かれています。ジョーは、ルーシーという妹がいますが、あるとき自分が目を離した先に誘拐されたことに罪悪感がつきまとい、数年後、兄が喧嘩に巻き込まれたのに自分は助けることもできなかったと自分に嫌気がさし、悶々と生きています。一方ルーシーは、ノルマという名前で育ちますが、誘拐されたころの記憶はありません。でもリアル感がある夢をみるたびに、自分の生い立ちに疑問を持ちながら成長していきます。
舞台は、ノバスコシアとメイン州で進みます。風景の描写などがきれいです。ちょうど私は、サリバンクロッシングを観ていて、ノバスコシアに興味があったところだったので偶然性に驚きました。ただ個人的には物語はとてもゆっくりで、悲しさ、孤独感に満ちた話が多いので少し重かったです。
