We used the route that climbs up a ski slope before joining the trail near the summit. There is a herd path up the ski slope itself, and I recommend sticking to it. It goes up the Grey Ghost ski trail, which is very steep as it climbs up Saddleback mountain quickly. After climbing up just this, you arrive surprisingly close to the summit, and the rest of the climb is easy. Keep that in mind when scaling the ski slope, as it is most of the battle.
\u3000Once you have scaled the slope, you can see a ski lift exit on the left. Once you pass the second ski lift exit, you should see the entrance to the proper hiking trail up to the summit (see picture below). You climb a narrow stone staircase, and the scenery changes almost as if the previous part of the hike was a mirage, with the vegetation changing drastically and suddenly. At such a high elevation, the plants near the summit must be really striving to survive. There are signs that say “Reforestation Area,” “Help Restore Natural Plant Life,” “Please Stay on the Trail.” It really helps drive home the idea that you are being given the gift of walking through nature, as well as the gift of climbing the mountain. Also, there are moments where you feel the grandeur of how nature survives up in the thin oxygen of the mountaintop. 
\u3000The trail meets the Appalachian Trail, then follows that to the summit. There are not tall trees around on top, so you can see the top of the mountain as you approach, and you can enjoy spectacular views looking down. If you have leftover energy after reaching the summit, you can continue on to The Horn, which is 1.7 miles from the top of Saddleback. As the name suggests, the trail from Saddleback to the horn is like the saddle of a horse as you hike along the ridge. You’ll think to yourself “We walked from there?” as you look back on where you came from, making the up and down of the hike pass by quickly. The hike along the ridge feels great. There are 360 degree views the whole way, which makes the hike between summits more than worth it. 
\u3000Near the summit of the horn, there are some places where things like ladders have been placed to help hikers on the trail. However they aren’t very stable, so we had to help and watch our daughter closely as she went up and down. 
\u3000Lastly, you will scramble up some rocks and arrive at the summit of the horn. You will feel the cool air against your skin, and really feel the “I made it!” of reaching the summit. The trail from Saddleback to The Horn follows the Appalachian Trail, which means the trail keeps going from The Horn on to the next summit and beyond. That being said, most hikers stop for a break here and turn back. This mountain in a hard to reach place will make you glad you came after climbing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
